Fermentation has begun…and there was much rejoicing.

wort-smA friend on mine and Dawn, we’ll call him Derrick to protect the not so innocent, has organized a special brew of a Gingered Irish Red aged in Buffalo Trace whiskey barrel. Six 5 gallon batches will be made, re-racked, and then aged for 3 months in a Buffalo Trace whiskey barrel. I’m not quite sure where Derrick got the whiskey barrel, however, the simplest and therefore most likely explanation is that he stole it from pirates off the coast of Belize.  We will be force carbing 15 gallons with Korny kegs and then bottle conditioning the rest for all the brewers to take with them.

    Here is the recipe:

    Partial mash

    1lb of Colorado 2 row
    1/2lb Special Roast
    1/2lb Cara Redcarboy-sm
    1/2lb Crystal 75
    8lbs of extract light

2 oz of grated ginger at 10 minutes
Crystal at 60 and 30 minutes
    Fuggles at 10 minutes

Irish Ale yeast at 65-75 degrees

The brewing process seems to have been successful thus far and fermentation has begun.

      Ouch!

      Ouch!

Well, today I was in my first car accident. I’m fine, other than a bruised and scraped hand, but my car did not fare so well. I was driving home from work and approaching an intersection. My road was a north-south one-way and there was another one-way road running east-west. Some jackass in an SUV ran a red light and turned in front of me, I saw this and slowed down, making sure I was right and I had a green light. I did, so I kept going through the interesection, and boom, another SUV bangs into my front driver’s side wheel and pushed me to the side of the road, my front bumper stopping about two inches from a pole. My airbag deployed so fast I didn’t even realize it had gone off and foul-smelling smoke emitted from the steering wheel where the airbag had been. My horn was blaring and I couldn’t get my keys out of the ignition.

I got out of the car and made sure the people in the other car were okay. They were, they were very nice, just not very observant. The cops, firemen, and paramedics came and were all very nice and helpful. The cops gave me some very helpful advice and the tow truck man was very sweet. I was fortunate in that it wasn’t worse than it was, and everyone was so nice.

That said, I’m still really pissed, upset, and incredibly bummed that my two months old, brand spanking new car has been rendered undriveable. Boo.

        The Beer Warehouse

A magical place exists (not in my imagination) where one can buy a case of beer for 10 dollars a piece. A couple Saturdays a go my step-dad took my brother and I to a warehouse in Commerce City.  We left my house just after 8:30 in the morning. Typically it is recommended that one show up to the warehouse at 8:30 but give me a break, its Saturday, I’m barely up for work at 8:30.

          2009-12-19 09.27.43

We arrived at the warehouse around 9:30. People were pushing dolly’s with cases of beer stacked to the top to their cars. To the right of the door (large garage door) was a list of prices. Earlier in the day, someone…possibly beer gnomes, placed several palettes of beer on the floor of the warehouse. These cases of beer is what was available for purchase on this particular day and was available until it ran out. The scene was quite chaotic. People from all walks of life including the homeless were there to cash in.

2009-12-19 09.27.30We began to walk around the warehouse to see what our choices were though we had to act fast before all the beer was gone. Buying beer from this place requires at least two people. One to grab the beer and one to guard your stash. Since its pretty much chaos, and beer is scattered everywhere, its quite common for someone to walk up to a stack of beer and grab a case without realizing that its already spoken for. So we took turns standing guard while each of us piled up what we wanted. Because of our late arrival (9:30 am), much of the micro and imported beer was picked over. That being said we still made out pretty well.

It took two trips with the dolly to haul out our loot. As  you would expect, this modern day speakeasy took cash only. One man guarded the door. As we exited, he very poorly counted up our cases and asked for our cash. I’m pretty sure we got a case or two for free. I’m not sure how or why this place exists, but  I will not question it. Sources have informed me that Coors has purchased the warehouse, so whether or not these back alley deals will continue I cannot say.

me-thumbAnnyong! Welcome to The Flog. A place where I can exercise my 1st amendment right and comfortably excrete my thoughts onto the web. Its actually a little sad that a software developer has taken so long to get himself into the blogosphere, but better late than never.  So here is my Hello World post.

Its not every day that one publishes something on the web. Being this the first post on The Flog, I decided seek out a professional writer to assist me in composing this monumental first post. Unfortunately, the writer was terrible and had to be sacked. What a horrible idea and a waste of time I might add…
